Coping with Stress During Infectious Disease Outbreaks

​Crisis Hotline Available for Dealing with Pandemic Anxiety

Each person responds to the pandemic in different ways. The Behavioral Health Services Department is working to get that message out that “it is okay to feel overwhelmed, emotional, worried, or simply frustrated.” Residents can call the Crisis Hotline 1-855-278-4204 or text RENEW to 741741 to talk with someone. You can share this information with your constituents on Facebook and Twitter.

Grief Counseling

The Bill Wilson Center Centre for Living with Dying has launched a hotline for those that have lost a loved one to COVID-19. Residents who live in Santa Clara County and would like to talk with someone, can call at (408) 243-0222. Grief counseling is available in 150 languages.

Parenting Tips During COVID-19

​Parenting during COVID-19 can be stressful while sheltering at home.
 
Younger children may not have the words to describe feelings and are more likely to act out their stress, anxiety, or fear through challenging behaviors. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you use positive discipline by reinforcing good behaviors and address children’s fears. Tips for parenting younger children during the pandemic can be found here.
 
Social distancing requirements may be especially hard for teenagers, who may feel cut off from their friends and regular activities. Teens may understandably feel disappointment as milestone events such as graduations, proms, and other events are cancelled or postponed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
