Milpitas Unified School District

General obligation bond measure on the June 5th, 2012 ballot.
On Tuesday, February 28, 2012, the Milpitas Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously to place a local school facilities bond measure on the June 5th, 2012 ballot.  If approved by 55% of voters in the Milpitas Unified School District, the measure will renovate and repair Milpitas schools, ensuring all students have access to safe and modern classrooms that support a 21st-century education. 

“We have a strong academic program and great teachers here in Milpitas,” said Superintendent Cary Matsuoka.  “With rising test scores, many families move to our community simply for our excellent schools.  Now we need the safe and modern facilities to support our outstanding programs.”

“Our students deserve to learn in safe and up-to-date classrooms,” said Marsha Grilli, MUSD Board Vice-President.  “This local measure will make the basic repairs our schools need.”  The measure will repair leaky roofs, upgrade fire and earthquake safety systems, keep schools clean and well-maintained, prevent overcrowding by providing additional classrooms, update learning technology and upgrade classrooms and science labs.  The measure will generate $95 million and cost local property owners $50 per $100,000 of assessed value annually. 

“This measure includes strong fiscal accountability provisions that require every penny to benefit Milpitas schools, “ said Dan Bobay, MUSD Board President.  “None of the funds can be spent on administrator salaries and independent citizens’ oversight and annual audits will ensure that funds are spent on voter-approved projects.  The State can’t take any of the funds.”

In an effort to better understand the priorities of Milpitas voters, the District hired EMC Research to conduct a poll in November 2011.  The poll helped the District understand how voters view our local schools, how voters prioritize potential bond projects and whether voters would support a local bond measure.  To see the full results, click here.
