1 form (see ParentSquare) • Jackie Vo-Felbinger • Thursday, Nov 9 at 3:50 PM • 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade
Dear Mattos Families,
We are so excited to announce that our school is hosting our first spelling bee! The spelling bee will be open for students from 1st to 6th grade. The Spelling Bee will be conducted in two parts.
The Preliminary Round
The preliminary round is a way for us to select the top 4 spellers from each grade level. This round will be during the school day on Thursday, December 14, 2023. Teachers will send home study materials with students about 3 weeks before the preliminary round. Make sure to help your child study if they are participating! This will be a closed event (meaning no parents on campus). There will be no makeups if a student is not present for the preliminary round.
Mattos Spelling Bee Finals
After the preliminary round, the top 4 spellers from each grade level will participate in the Mattos Spelling Bee Finals on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at 6:00pm in the Mattos Multi-Purpose Room. The top speller in the finals will then make their way to the next step in the Scripps Spelling Bee process.
Students need parent/guardian permission in order to participate in the Spelling Bee.
Please fill out the form below if you would like your student to participate.
The deadline to sign up is Friday, November 17, 2023.
If you have any questions, please reach out to our Spelling Bee Committee: Mr. Neria, Ms. John, and Ms. Yazdani.
We are looking forward to Mattos’ very first Spelling Bee!

Student Safety Patrol Opportunity for 5th and 6th Graders
Jackie Vo-Felbinger • Wednesday, Oct 4 at 7:23 PM • 5th Grade, 6th Grade
Greetings 5th and 6th Grade Students and Families,
Mattos is creating a Student Safety Patrol to assist with morning drop off while developing student citizenry and leadership. We are looking for 5th and 6th graders who would like to participate in the program and gain volunteer service hours for your participation.
What is Mattos Student Safety Patrol?
It is a program with student leaders who will assist with the safety of students before school at the morning valet. Students will be supervised by Mattos staff and assist with the unloading of their younger peers out of their vehicles during morning drop off. Students will receive training so they know how to assist safely. Their time will be logged in units of hours which will apply to volunteer service awards that will be presented at Mattos Meetup. Students will also be invited to a pizza party celebration at the end of the year for all their hard work and to provide feedback on the program.
Who can participate?
Any Mattos 5th and 6th grade student
What is the time commitment?
You can indicate below how much you would like to participate. We will create a schedule for your child and share with you so you know what days to report. Students should report to school at 8:00 on their first day for training and then 8:20 on their assigned days thereafter. Their shift ends at 8:44 and then they will then go to their lines to start the day with their peers. Expect to participate a minimum of 4 weeks per year or more based on your preference.
What if my child has to be out on a given day or is unexpectedly ill?
Students should let the Student Safety Patrol Coordinators through email. The coordinators are Ms. Soto and Ms. Hang.
When will the program start?
We plan to collect interest now and plan to start the program with our first group of students on Tuesday, October 10th.
Here are some expectations of Student Safety Patrol participants:
By following these expectations, student leaders can help to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Students who do not follow the expectations of the program will receive a warning. Additional incidents may result in the removal of the program.
We look forward to elevating our student leadership as our school continues to expand and grow. Thank you for all your support through our years of expansion.
